ABOUT DeafBeat:
DeafBeat, with nine deaf youths, is an ongoing project by Pusat Majudiri Y for the Deaf, YMCA of Kuala Lumpur, which is part of the YMCA’s outreach to the deaf community.

DeafBeat was formed in Oct Protected content . The funding aimed to provide a group of hearing impaired individuals with the training and equipment necessary to start a percussion troupe, to showcase their capabilities in performing arts and to rise above their disability.

DeafBeat is trained under the guidance of the renowned Artistic Director, Bernard Goh, of Hands Percussion. DeafBeat broke into the world of Performing Arts by staging two concerts at Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre(KLPac). The first was “Pulsing Spirit” in year Protected content followed by “Sound of Silent Dreams” in year Protected content . Currently, the group is coached by Muji Lee Mok Yee since Protected content .

DeafBeat, the only deaf Malaysian drum group has undergone many challenges and obstacles in their lives simply because they cannot hear. In spite of their disability, they are determined to “hear” the drums and their perseverance, determination and hard work have enabled them to overcome their disability. The group’s activities have also resulted in a source of income for its members as they have been invited to performed at government, NGO and corporate functions in Malaysia. The international stage has taken them in the last 10 years to perform at music festival for the disabled and for hearing community.
