Travelling to Istanbul (Kuala Lumpur)

Hi, I'm planning a trip to Istanbul..read much about it but question is..Is it easy to move around to visit places there using public transport or should I just book a tour from here...Don't favour the 2nd option much hence seeking opinion if anyone has done it by themselves...Any good travel agent there to recommend incase I do need one..thanks :)
