Since moving to Warsaw, I have been able to make some great friends and attend InterNations events with other expats who understand what it's like to be so far from home.

Living in Lodz

Lodz is Poland’s third biggest city, with a population of almost three quarters of a million. It lies right in the heart of the country, around 85 miles to the southwest of Warsaw. The city is known as “The Polish Manchester,” not just because of this central location but also due to its fortune on the success of its textile industry. This heritage can be seen in the Księży Młyn area, where expats living in Lodz can find a huge collection of 19th-century textile mills and factories. The wealth that these factories produced, meanwhile, is evidenced in Piotrkowska Street, which is one of the longest commercial streets in Europe and a major attraction in the city. Lodz is an industrial city that is now transforming itself for the 21st century economy, with substantial new development. Any new expatriate in Lodz can join InterNations to find out more about their bustling new home. Here, they can connect with other global minds to gain a deeper insight into the city and life abroad in general.

Moving to Lodz

Lodz is served by Lodz Wladyslaw Reymont Airport. It is a small airport but has international connections to Ireland, the UK and Denmark. Three rail stations connect the city with all major Polish cities and the wider European rail network. Being so centrally located, Lodz probably has the best road connections of any city in Poland and is served by major pan-European highways. Expatriates moving to Lodz will find that the city has a thriving academic community and is home to the University of Lodz, Medical University of Lodz and Lodz University of Technology. The city’s position as an important cultural center is enhanced by the presence of the National Film School. Expats in Lodz will also find themselves living in a green city with the largest city park in Europe. Nevertheless, anyone can find it tough to get to grips with a new city, however, new expats living in Lodz can call on the expertise of other expatriates in the city and Poland in general on the discussion boards and forums of InterNations. Here, they will find many other internationally focused individuals and benefit from their shared experiences.

Working in Lodz

Evidence of the city’s history as a major textile center is still present with many small manufacturers remaining in the city. Lodz is also a major logistics center, benefiting from its central position on the road and rail networks. The city promotes investor friendly policies and many foreign companies have taken advantage of this to open facilities in Lodz. High-tech companies such as Dell and Infosys have also located here. These are exciting times for the city and expats working in Lodz can take advantage of opportunities by keeping abreast of developments at InterNations. The Expat Magazine complements these resources with informative articles on various expatriation related topics such as culture shock, moving with your family, international finance and repatriation.
