Documentation needed to work (London)

Hi,

I am a Canadian looking to move to London to work. I was born in London and am a British Citizen but I do not have a UK Passport. Some of the recruiters I have spoken to state that I need a UK Passport to work but I am wondering that since I have a birth certificate do I really need a passport? Anyone else in a similar situation?
