International marriages (London)

"Mogli e buoi dei paesi tuoi" recites an old Italian proverb. Literal translation: Wives and oxen from your own land. The old prover suggest that when it comes to prized possessions and wives it is better to choose close to home. In my almost 20 years as an expat, however, I have met many couples where husbands and wives were from different countries. I am myself married to a Lithuanian who has spent most of his adult life in the US. My observation is that international marriages often succeed because partners make a greater effort to communicate and don't assume their spouse share their same perspectives.
