Opening a UK bank account from the US (London)

Hi-
I'm moving to London in a month for grad school. What are some good free UK bank accounts that I can open from the US before my move, as a non-UK citizen/perm resident? I only found HSBC but it charges monthly fee, which isn't what I want--a free checking account, hopefully with interests.
