The Robert Gore Rifkind Center German Expressionist Studies at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art is seeking a Curatorial Assistant to work on two major international loan exhibitions, one devoted to German and French modern paintings, the other to film pioneer, painter and print-maker Hans Richter, while also providing general assistance in the department. The Rifkind Center consists of over 6,000 works on paper and a specialized library of some 8,000 volumes devoted to German Expressionism.
The Curatorial Assistant will assist the Curator with the curatorial aspects involved in organizing both special and permanent collections exhibitions including research, documentation, and assisting with the selection of works, creating checklists, writing/editing brochure content, didactic panels and press releases, conceiving and creating digital content, as well as managing exhibition loans, permissions, and correspondence, and organizing files related to the exhibitions. The Curatorial Assistant will also assist with researching and generating catalogue materials including chronologies and biographies. In addition the Curatorial Assistant will coordinate conferences and conference-related events as well as other educational components.
The qualified candidate will have a Master’s degree in art history with a PhD or ABD preferred. Exceptional written and oral communication skills, and fluency in German and at least a reading knowledge of French are necessary. A demonstrated interest in early twentieth-century German art is desirable with experience in a museum setting and especially handling works on paper including prints, drawings and photographs preferred. Organizational and planning abilities as well as the ability to work both independently and as part of a team are essential.
This position may be filled as one full-time or two part time positions.
