Uber or Car Hire (Los Angeles)

I am staying in LA for a month starting mid-September and I was wondering if I should hire a car to drive around the city or if taking Ubers would work out cheeper.
Also, any suggestions of a cheap but reliable car hire, if that's the way to go.
