Where to stay? (Los Angeles)

A friend and I will be vititing LA in early july for about 4 days. We will not have a car and are planning on seeing the usual tourist sights. We are having trouble deciding on where to stay. We would like to be able to use public transport, be close to the sights as well as a safe neighbourhood. Any suggestions?
