American passport and working VISA for Switzerland (Lugano)

I have an American friend with a big question. Maybe one of you can help.
She came last year with a working VISA. Her contract ended last month and supposingly she should leave the Switzerland very soon.
Question: is there a way and where can she go (Italy?) to stamp her passport for a further 3 months turist permit?
