Contemporary Italy on screen (free event!) (Luxembourg)

When you think about Italy what comes to your mind? Probably some ancient ruins, a landscape of Venice or Amalfi, tasty food or designer fashion. Probably Dante, if you are into literature, or Michelangelo, if you are more of an art lover. But what about Italy today?
The Italian Library Days organised by DG Translation are an invitation to discover the actual landscape beyond the postcard, and to meet Italian contemporary culture, language and society. We will look at this through the cameras of Italian filmmakers, as cinema offers a powerful key to understanding what is going on in Italy, including from a visual and linguistic perspective.
Giacomo Manzoli, Professor of Italian Film History at the University of Bologna, will give a lecture on contemporary Italian cinema and the way it portrays the country, its inhabitants, its culture and its art, and its values and beliefs, reviewing some of the most meaningful recent works.
Delia Chiaro, Professor of English Language and Translation at the University of Bologna, will focus on the language spoken in contemporary Italian cinema and the difficulties encountered when such dialogues must be translated and adapted for international audiences.
As a tribute to the previous Greek EU Presidency and as a testimony to the long-standing relationship between Italy and Greece, a play based on the Odyssey in Italian, Greek and French will close the event in both Brussels and Luxembourg.
