The arrival of Sinterklaas in the Netherlands is a festive occassion, and his arrival is broadcast on live TV. Sinterklaas is the main figure in the annual children's celebration on 5 December, which is referred to as Pakjesavond (known as gift night). That is when Sinterklaas and his helpers, Zwarte Pieten, deliver presents to children in their homes. Sinterklaas usually knocks on the front door and leaves behind a sack of presents on the doorstep. The arrival of Sinterklaas and his helpers signals that children can begin to put out their shoes if they have been good. The next morning they will expect a treat in their shoes!
Sinterlaas arrives in Maastricht from Spain at 10:00am and takes up residence on the Rederij Stiphout in Maastricht, temporarily renamed the "Spanish Valley".
