ATMs for people from the U.S. (Madrid)

Hi,
I just got here yesterday and have not been able to make any of my cards work on the ATMs in my neighborhood. This also happened to me in Uruguay, and I saw a post on internations that BBVA was the only one that worked for some people from the U.S. I was wondering if anyone had experience like this. Thank you!
