Getting a driving licence in Spain (Madrid)

I wanted to know how can I get a driving licence here in Spain. I already have an Indian driving licence but I am told it is not valid here.
I asked the local colleagues here but they said it is very very difficult to get for outsiders, they make you compulsorily take classes and each class is 40 Euros
