We know that many of you are great writers and have a lot of fantastic stories to tell — from exciting adventures to funny mishaps. If you would like to get involved, show us what expat life is like for you and get included in our new Expat Expert Magazine series. You can learn more about the requirements further down.

“I am most grateful that the people are so hospitable and friendly. They easily make any foreigner feel at home.”

"Vienna makes you a better person! It brings organization into your life and planning for a better future. If you are willing to work hard, life is fun in Vienna!"

"Dear lovely windy city, I believe that I owe you an apology. I was presumptuous and judgmental, and I thank you today for proving me wrong every step of the way."

Many have already submitted their thank you letters to their city, and you can, too!

Submission Requirements

In September and October 2021, our topic is:

If you could write a thank you letter to your city, what would it say.

Maybe you found a vibrant community in your host city that welcomed you with open arms. Maybe the atmosphere is the main reason why you consider your town the perfect place for expats and global minds: the green spaces, the laidback lifestyle! Or maybe you and your host city even got off to a rocky start, but you have come to love and embrace its rough edges. We want to read the full story of your life and experience in your city!

Tell us why you are grateful to live in your home abroad!

When you send us your letter, please make sure that you provide a finished version of it. Of course, we are happy to proofread and edit it for you. If we decide to publish your letter, we will get in touch with you, and you will be credited as the author with a link to your InterNations profile.

Your letter should have the following:

  • A title
  • A beginning, a middle, and an end
  • A minimum word count of 250 words

How to Participate

You can submit your letter through this form: We have provided a rough format to make it easy for you to structure your letter.

The deadline is Sunday, 31 October.

If we choose it for publication, we will get in touch with you within the following two months.
