Medical (Malta)

My wife and I are retired and are thinking of moving to Malta.
We are from Australia. My wife has a European passport, and is also an Australian passport holder.
I have had some health issues which we have firmly under control. However, they preclude me getting totally comprehensive health insurance, as they are 'pre-existing conditions'.
However, should I require medical treatment, would I be able to seek this in the local hospitals? What costs are involved?
We would appreciate any assistance with these queries.
