Visiting Malta in Scooter, would you recommend it?

Hi,

I will be in Malta from August 22nd to 30th, we are thinking in hiring a scooter in order to avoid the traffic jam in the middle of August in Malta, but I have read in some forum that it may not be very secure. Does anyone had the experience and could recommend me if it is really unsecure or if being cautious could be enough? Or what would be the best way to visit the island?
