Kidnap threat in Manila?

Hey!
I keep seeing more articles, workshops or advertisements about the increasing risk of kidnaps in Manila. How real is that risk? You, as expats, do you feel safe living in Manila? Especially Makati?

For me is kind of hard to believe that it can be a real threat in such a developed city as Makati, but I am still curious about this. Did anyone has a bad experience related to feeling unsafe as an expat?

How safe is for an European women to live/work/travel in Makati or Philippines?
