Moving to Manila - what to expect?!?

Hi everyone,
it looks like I will be sent to Manila for 3 months. I have never been to the Philippines and have no idea what to expect apart from the little I heard or read.
I would appreciate any info on safety, health, DOs and DON'Ts or anything else that might be important for a complete newbie.
