Relocating to Manila

Hi there, I have worked in many countries as Civil Engineer for over 30 years and now intend to retire in Philippines. Planning to land in Manila in the first week of May 14.

So far I have gone through PRA, Immigration, Property to Rent, ELRA webites and in touch with ELRA guys. Could you guys guide me what should I know before landing in Manila. What I have read about security in Manila is horrible but I am not sure about current situation since all those news are dated Protected content . Current security situation is not clear.

My current plan: book a hotel, land in Manila then contact expats. Is this a goof move?
