Weekend in Medellin

Hi All,
I'm looking for some helpful tips on places to stay and things to do over a weekend visit to Medellin. The idea is to get a real feel for the city.
We will be two girls, so safety is important in terms of location, and El Poblado was recommended, is this a good idea?
Also any other useful information will be appreciated
