How safe is Queretaro, Mexico? (Mexico City)

Hi, I am a German , living currently in Ireland and I might have the opportunity to get a good job in Queretaro, Mexico. I normally would jump at such an opportunity to meet new people, culture, way of life etc but I hear mixed reports about the safety aspects. Can anyone give me some advise?
