Research in Liberia (Monrovia)

I am a graduate student studying the history of Liberia. Depending on what develops, I may go to Liberia to do research in Monrovia. If I end up having to do this, I have a few questions.

First, where should I stay? I am familiar with the hotels listed on other threads, such as Mamba Point, but have also heard of budget options such as the Lutheran Guest House and St. Theresa's Convent. Is anyone familiar with these establishments, and whether or not they are safe?

What is the best way of getting around town? I have not owned a car in years. Are there reliable taxis, etc?

Any information I can get would be greatly appreciated.
