Alternative ideas for holidays in Moscow

I'm in a great need for advice. My friends from NY plan to come to Moscow in December. They are fed up with Red Square, vodka, caviar, and so on.

Need something traditional, NOT boring and with a soul that your have already tryed and found cool.
What could you recommend?
