Moscow as a possibility?

As a Canadian considering moving family (two children ages 12 and Protected content to Russia for a six month + period, I am curious as to which city is better / easier to live in from a foreigner's point of view. Is St. Petersburg better or Moscow?

If Moscow is recommended could you also suggest a nice neighbourhood. I have just read with great interest "newby's" thread and wonder if the same neighbourhoods would be recommended. I would like to be central within walking distance to shops, cultural attractions and parks.
