Visit to Moscow

I was hoping someone could give me some advise as I have a trip planned to Moscow on 23rd August and I'm not sure what to do.
What is the current situation? I'm coming with a friend and we fly into Moscow then on to St Petersburg for a few days an then back to Moscow for the weekend where we were really hoping to party!
I don't trust the news as they always over dramatise but thought would be good to hear it from someone on the ground.
