I thought settling in Sarajevo would be more difficult but with InterNations I quickly connected with other South African and American expats.
Living in Mostar
Referred to affectionately by the people who live there as “The Bridge-Keeper”, Mostar is one of the most beautiful and geographically important cities in the Herzegovina region of Bosnia and Herzegovina. With a population of just under 120,000 people, Mostar is the fifth largest city in the country, and sits proudly on the Neretva River. If you want to learn a little bit about Mostar before you start living there, you could explore the surrounding area on a first visit, in order to absorb the way of the people and the eclectic atmosphere of the city. Mostar's proudest monument is the beautiful Stari Mostar - the old bridge that sits over the river. The bridge was built in the 16th century by the Ottomans, and is considered one of the greatest examples of Islamic architecture in the whole of the Balkans. Expats living in Mostar should find their stay a rewarding and exciting experience, and with the help of the InterNations community of expatriates it can be as easy as living in your native country.

Moving to Mostar
Many people move to Mostar to experience the amazing weather and take in the stunning diversity of architecture all year round. Considered to have a lot in common with Croatia in terms of climate, the summers in Mostar are often very hot, and the winters are warm, too. Foreign aesthetic trends in architecture merged with indigenous styles to create some unique and artful buildings, such as the Ottoman Muslibegovića house. If you are thinking of moving to Mostar to enjoy the culture and diversity of the city, you should visit the InterNations website beforehand to see what sort of obstacles you might come across on the way. The site can help you sort out the required paperwork you need before the trip, as well as teach you a few things about living abroad as an expatriate in Mostar. Or simply use InterNations to socialize and network with like-minded expats from around the world.
Working in Mostar
The metalworking and aluminum industry dominate the Mostar economy, with a lesser-represented (but still thriving) banking and telecommunications sector. Two of the largest banks in the whole of Bosnia-Herzegovina have headquarters based in Mostar, and it is the second most important financial city, after Sarajevo. Some of the country's largest corporations also base their operations out of Mostar, because of its strong geographical location and mineral deposits. If you are an expatriate working in Mostar, but need some help with navigating cultural barriers, you should browse through the InterNations forums and content section to learn for example about business etiquette from other like-minded expats living in Mostar or Bosnia and Herzegovina in general.
