How can I be a freelancer/artist/retiree in India? (Mumbai)

Hi, my husband is a translator and I'm a visual artist/photographer. We are living in Cambodia at the moment but starting to think where to go next and India has always been on our list. But many countries don't recognize freelancing as a status so we don't really fit in any categories where visa are concerned. We could be retired but India doesn't have any retirement visa either. So my question is , what is the best way to live in India for a while, we don't need to find employment as our clients are all over the world, and I'm not sure we need a working permit as we work from home, and I'm not sure what artists do when they want to live in India... Any information from people in the same situation would be more then welcome :-).
