Use of U.S. cell phone in India (Mumbai)

Has anyone had experience doing this? I have an international calling plan with Verizon - which is quite expensive - I would like to have cheaper local plan. I have read that you can purchase an Indian SIM card for local service. Just curious how that works - where to buy, how reliable and what's the best provider. Any help would be appreciated.
