What about the countryside / commuting by car? (Munich)

Dear everyone,

I am looking at the prospective of relocating in Munich. I am a little bit surprised and scared by all the "I am joining the long queue of desperados..." messages in this thread :) I thought that finding a spot in Munich wouldn't be so difficult. Perhaps some of you cares to elaborate on what factors make the search so difficult?

However, I was thinking on possibly looking into the rural areas around Munich: would it be any idea? How would life be (will I be stared down by everyone as an outrageous intruder? <g> ), and what does commuting by car look like, in the region?
