The workshop will be led by Seana Mercedes Mallen, who holds an MA in Drawing as Process from Kingston University, Protected content . Seana is an artist with international recognition, having had one person exhibitions in the USA, England and in Bahrain. She has led similar workshops for both under-graduate and MA students in London, and has enjoyed teaching drawing and painting to beginners and more advanced students for over 15 years, and she relishes the opportunity to share her enthusiasm.

Saturday, Jan 8: LINE and Right-Brain thinking and SEEING
What is “Observational Drawing?”
Pictionary in teams
Introductions, of us and of the course
Directed drawing in pairs, Right- brain Exercises, upside down drawing
Lunch
Sighting and the awareness of negative shapes and spaces.
Contour Drawing (look at Picasso, Matisse, Hockney)
Straight and curve line analysis.
Materials: Pen, Graphite Stick, and Sticks and Ink

Sunday, Jan 9. TONE: make the 3-D illusion of volume, form and space
Seeing in tone, using a tonal strip.
Simple still life in a variety of media,
Light and shadow. Mark-making. Cross-hatching.
Lunch
“Tone Puzzle” a collaborative piece.
Perspective. (a little theory and practice)
Materials: Pencil, pen, charcoal, graphite stick. Chalk and Charcoal.

Monday, Jan 10: EXPRESS YOURSELF
Your MARK is your VOICE. And like your voice or your hand-writing, it is yours alone. Use it to express not just what something looks like, but how you feel about it. SHOUT! or whisper…or DEMAND or laugh or sing.
Lunch
Quink and bleach and a final collaborative composition. Work LARGE and loose!
