Rent a car or buy? Or public transport? (Muscat)

Hi All,
Apologies if this has been asked before. I did try to find any similar questions in the search function.
I am potentially going to be offered some work in Oman from being based here in the U.K previously - excited!
Anyway it could be from anywhere from 6 months minimum to a 12 months maximum. Having never worked in Oman before I am not sure how efficient the public transport is, I've heard taxis are cheap though.
Would this be the best option for me? Or more economical and convenient to either hire or buy a car?
Should hiring a car be the best option in the short term, would anyone be able to point me in the direction of some cheap car hire places? Any help would be massively appreciated - thanks in advance :)
