Mosquitoes in daily life. (Nairobi)

We are potentially relocating from Japan to Nairobi and there is only one point which turns me a bit concerned: mosquitoes. Not malaria properly, but the routine around it as my son is two years old and sensitive to mosquitoes bites. My questions are, please: do you have to use repellent every single day? What about the toxicity of these products - if used in the long run? Can I use citronellainstead - is it effective for daily life in town? Apart from safari preparation, could you focus and help me a bit talking about life with mosquitoes in Nairobi in the daily life of a child of two years old?
