Need help to open a bank account (New Delhi)

Hi guys...and gals,

I just moved to new delhi for my final year in islamic jurisprudence...I am seriously in need of opening a bank account in india...When i went to IOB to open an account they asked for a Ration Card...Obviously since i am a foreigner i do not have it...The question that i have is that is it possible for foreigners to open an account in indian banks??? and if so what documents do i need??
