Safety in Delhi (New Delhi)

Hi,
I am on the verge of accepting an exciting job offer in Delhi, to begin in a couple of months time. My wife and I have visited previously (for a few days) and liked the place. However, a number of my wifes friends who live in India (of indian origin) have repeatedly 'warned' us against Delhi, as it is not a safe place for women. The recent tragic events have made us take their comments more seriously.

We would really appreciate if people could share their experiences with us as this is a big move for us and the excitement of our dream move is now fading the more we read. We know the media likes to sensationailse things so some first hand accounts would be appreciated.
