New visitor to New Orleans

I expect to visit NO from March 26 for 10 days or two weeks, from Amsterdam, The Netherlands. I have applied for work there so thought it a good idea to visit. Any tips on cheapish accommodation, and things to do in region are welcome but also living there etc tips, provided I can get a working visa. I am British/Australian and a communications specialist.
