Accommodation on first arrival (New York)

Hi there, I've recently obtained my US passport, I am an English man about to leave my job bartending in Paris and move over to New York in September. Once there I'm sure it'll be not too much difficulty to find a job, however, I haven't a clue as to what to do for accommodation for the first couple of weeks whilst i look for a job. I thought I had a safety net through my girlfriend but it turns out there's a 50 / 50 chance she won't be in NY and finds out 2 weeks before I'm due to make the move. I need to book my flights very soon, too. If ANYONE can help me out, with recommandations or anything it'd be hugely appreciated! I'm getting slightly scared about it all! Thanks a million!
