Arriving in NYC - First steps (New York)

Hey guys,
my wife & I will move to Manhattan in 4 weeks and I will have 3 months to kill before I will get my work permit.
Do you guys have have some good tips for

1) Step to Step guide what you have to do when you arrive in the states? (officials, money, insurance, apartment)
2) Tips what to prepare beforehand (i.e. buy transformers for appliances? what else?)
3) Any good websites that keep you up-to-date regarding bars, restaurants, parties, museums, whatever to do in your free time :)
