Arriving in NYC - First Steps (New York)

Hello everyone! I am a handbag designer and photographer and I am moving to NY on an O-1 visa. I already lived in NJ for a year back in college, and I have been there several times.

Still, that's obviously different from really moving there, and therefore I have a couple of questions, or better: I am super thankful for any input, tips + tricks and help.

The first things I need to do are:
- get my social security card
- get a NY driver's license (as an Austrian, can I just exchange my Austrian for a NY license, or do I have to take the test...)
- rent a room or apartment (I'll be staying with a friend in the first couple of weeks)
