Car Insurance in NY (New York)

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with getting car insurance in New York as a newcomer without a local driver's license (initially)? From what I have read, I will be required to swap my driver's license within 30 days, however, what concerns me is that no insurance company will cover me until I have driving history in the US (which seems a bit odd). I really need to get a car as soon as I arrive for work purposes.
Normally insurance premiums are just higher to take into account the perceived higher risk related to the insured, however, it seems as if they won't even cover you.

Any guidance on which companies are accommodating would be appreciated.
