Need a car in NYC - any experiences? (New York)

Hey guys,
I was recently transfered to the US and my office is located 25 miles north of NYC. As we decided to live in the city I have to commute ever day. Aparently, it is way faster for me to do the commute with the car (instead of subway and train)!
Has anyone of you experiences in getting a car here?
I was thinking of getting a used car because I think that with my not-yet-existing credit history I won't be able to get a leasing or financing. Any tips would be highly appreciated!
