power in the usa (New York)

hi,

Need some advice please. We are moving to US from SA In a few months. South African voltage is 220. I would like to know if anyone has ever taken their appliances across and used a transformer to make it compatible with USA voltage. If so does it work and what would it cost. Would this work for TVS and DVD players. If not I would at least like to use my small kitchen appliances like juicer, coffee machine .etc .
