Private Room for Rent (New York)

Hi all, I moved from Milano and am having the hardest time finding a decent room or apt. mates who are not freaky to live with in Manhattan and in Jersey City as well.

I know Manhattan well and I've exhausted craigslist and whatever else there is but I really don't know Jersey city much. Any insights on neighbourhoods or sites to look at will be appreciated.
