Living in Palembang

Palembang is the seventh largest city in Indonesia, with a population of over 1.7 million people. It is the capital of the province of South Sumatra and is still known as "The Land of Srivijaya," after once being the capital of the Kingdom of Srivijaya. It is split in two by the Musi River, across which spans the Ampera Bridge, a major landmark of the city. To the north of the river, Seberang Ilir is the business and culture center, while Seberang Ulu in the south is home to the political and administrative center. The city is home to many neighborhoods and diverse populations and cultures, such as the Chinese, Arab, Javanese and Indian communities. This ancient city is indeed a truly multicultural one and InterNations is a good way for new expats living in Palembang to begin to get to grips with the city. This online community of global minds is an excellent source for all sorts of information about the new home of the expatriate in Palembang.

Moving to Palembang

Palembang is served by Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II International Airport, with connections across Indonesia and international destinations such as Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. The city also benefits from three ports, with regular ferry services to destinations across the country. Palembang also has a busy railway station, so expatriates moving to Palembang should not have any trouble getting there. Once arrived at the city, the new expat in Palembang will find an extensive network of mini-bus routes alongside a Bus Rapid Transit system. These public transport options are further supplemented by water and road taxis. Expatriates relocating with their family will be glad to hear that the city has a number of universities and a wide variety of neighborhoods. It is a good idea to consult other expats in Palembang at InterNations to find out about the best places to live and work in the city.

Working in Palembang

Palembang has undergone a recent boom after hosting the Southeast Asian Games in 2011. Energy and construction are large employers and tourism also contributes much to the local economy. The three ports bring vital commerce and wealth into the city and also contribute to an extremely diverse cultural life. On the discussion groups and forums of InterNations, you can try and connect with other expats living in Palembang or other parts of Indonesia to gain a greater understanding of the city and country and the economic opportunities they offers. Along with making new friends, you may also uncover professional opportunities and make new business connections. Our Expat Magazine, meanwhile, carries lots of articles on being successful in the expatriate life, regardless of whether you are living and working in Palembang, Indonesia, or any other corner of the world.
