Foreign driving license (Panama City)

I understand that I can drive in Panama on my UK Driving License for 3 months while my residence is being processed. I am told that I must leave and reenter after 3 months but am given different versions of this.
If I go to Costa Rica, can I drive over the border, have lunch and come back same day, or must I stay for one or two days?
