French nationality for Brits - apostilles (Paris)

Hello, I'm going for French nationality and trying to reduce the cost of this rather expensive mission! Whilst obviously I have to get birth certificates et al translated, I read that UK certificates do not need to be legalised: we just need them apostilled.

However, there is nothing on the British Embassy or FCOs' sites about just getting them apostilled (to be honest I'm not even sure what the difference is, although I guess apostilled is a simpler - and hopefully cheaper - version).

I asked the British Embassy, but no reply. Does anyone here have any ideas?
