Why learn the local language as an expat? (Paris)

As a French teacher and researcher, I'm interested in hearing the Pros and Cons around this question. When you live in another country, what are the good reasons to learn the local language? And what are the good reasons not to learn it?
Any feedback, opinions, experiences on that?
