Workshop: Self Defense – Saturday 4th May (Phnom Penh)

Phnom Penh Community College – Workshop: Self Defense – Saturday 4th May

Hi Everyone! Our next workshop will bring you valuable and practical knowledge of self defense. Learn to defend yourself, your property, or the well-being of another from harm. The workshop will be facilitated by Lance Jackson, a martial arts instructor who holds a second degree black belt in Aikido.

In a real life situation where you or someone with you faces a physical threat, you will need to act fast, with a clear head. Depending on the level of threat, who the attacker is or how many there are, you will need to think and act calmly and decisively.

In this workshop, Lance will focus on simple techniques that can be remembered automatically and applied easily. Participants will explore some basic threat situations from standing positions and while on the ground, for example, being pushed, having hair pulled or wrists twisted, being slapped, punched or choked. We will consider different types of responses according to whether the attacker is familiar or a stranger.

Workshop participants will practice several simple techniques to help develop:
- Awareness of surroundings
- Awareness of potential threats
- Awareness of choices (humour or consolation, avoidance, pre-emptive strikes and locks)
- Use of foot movements, leg guards, and kicks
- Use of hand guards, strikes, locks and holds

With this practice, you will feel and project both greater self-confidence and respect.

Please wear light but strong clothing like track pants and a shirt that won’t tear easily if grabbed.
