Australian wanting to move to Thailand (Phuket)

Hello all.

Nice to meet you and be a part of the community.

I was hoping someone could guide me in the right direction on how I would go about moving to Thailand to work and volunteer my time for a year. I’m finding things rather confusing, so I just need a good guide to direct me to websites etc.

I’m currently living in Melbourne, Australia so a reply from an Australian who has done this also would be of benefit.

What sort of Visa I’m allowed and for how long?
What sort of work am I allowed and how do I obtain a working permit. My current job is an Events Coordinator and my background consists of Marketing, Public Relations, Promotions, Event, Functions and Bar Management.
Accommodation and where is the cheapest and safest place to rent a 1 bedroom apartment, nothing fancy as long as it’s clean, cheap and safe.
Preferably, I would like to be based in Patong or the surrounding area.
