Official Statement: InterNations during the Corona Crisis

In this statement, we want to explain how InterNations has reacted to and operated during the corona crisis. This includes both how we handle our memberships as well as our local events and activities.

How We Reacted to the Pandemic

It was a difficult decision for us to cancel all in-person events, but our priority was to protect the health of our members, to slow down the spread of the virus, and to protect the most vulnerable people in our communities.

During the height of the pandemic, when in-person events were not possible, we offered our paying members additional free months of membership. As always, we were also in personal contact with many of our members who experienced difficult circumstances.

At the same time, we were working very hard to find ways for our members to still meet and spend time together safely online.

After only a few weeks, we already offered over 500 online activities worldwide to help expats and global minds connect and share experiences — more online events were being added every day. We made our event calendar globally accessible and also integrated Zoom into our platform to ensure that all our members around the world can meet online easily and with no additional costs for them. For a small team like ours, these were big changes in a very short period of time. Nevertheless, we wanted to do everything possible so that our members could continue to benefit from our services.

We are very happy that we were able to make a difference in many of our members’ lives and offer them a safe place to meet and exchange with each other during these difficult times. Since all other features that we offer our Albatross Members on the platform are also still available, the essence of our product has not changed. The positive feedback that we have received was overwhelming.

Resuming In-Person Events

Since restrictions on public gatherings are being lifted around the world, we allow the gradual resumption of in-person events in communities where it is deemed safe by local authorities.

While InterNations provides the infrastructure for people to meet and connect, our members organize and attend events independently and at their own discretion.

In order to keep our member safe and healthy, we are taking the following steps:

  • We provide clear recommendations to event organizers on a local level when it comes to the size and setting under which in-person events can be organized.
  • We stress the importance of mentioning the official health and safety recommendations to attendees.
  • We provide dedicated support and resource material to event organizers on how to host in-person events in a safe and fun way.
  • Our Guest List Manager app provided to event organizers to manage their attendees helps with contact tracing. In case an event attendee falls sick within two weeks after attending an event, this makes it easy to inform other attendees.

In places of the world where it is not safe to meet in person, our event calendar shows online events prominently. Any in-person events in these places are being declined by InterNations if suggested by event organizers.

However, many people who have met through InterNations also spend their time together outside of our official events and activities. When they do not use our platform to organize these get-togethers, this is nothing we can or aspire to control.

About Our Subscription Model

InterNations operates on a standard subscription model. For the convenience of our Albatross Members, the subscriptions are renewed automatically, which is stated at several places throughout the platform and in our e-mail communication.

While this has not changed since the outbreak of Covid-19, we have taken many steps to ensure that we continue to offer our members the service and value they expect for their subscription fee.

Through our free trial offer, members have the chance to try out the Albatross Membership without committing to a subscription. They can cancel any time during the free trial, while keeping access to the Albatross Membership.

Generally, a cancellation of the membership is possible anytime within the first 14 days after signing up and a full refund will be given. After the first two weeks, a current subscription can be cancelled until one day before it is due for renewal to avoid further charges. Once it has been renewed, it runs for the duration that has been chosen by the user and can be cancelled for the next term.

Withholding payment does not equal a cancellation, and InterNations is not in a position to end the membership in such a case. A subscription is a legal contract which can only be terminated by following the proper cancellation procedure, not by withholding payment. This means that existing commitments do not become void simply because a member chooses to not pay their subscription.
